and barack obama said that was the top priority but since november 6th, all we have talked about is debt reduction. that wasn't an issue. the words fiscal cliff were never uttered at any point in any one of the three presidential debates and that became the entire conversation for six weeks after the election and now more debt reduction. this is why we have elections to settle these issues. the issue to focus on is jobs. the president had a jobs plan on the table for two years now, the american jobs act. not going to get it passed in full but look at some of the elements of that. let's start to focus on that issue because that's the issue the american people care about. >> i want to play an excerpt of the president's first inauguration. let's play a little bit of what he said. >> today, i say to you that the challenges we face are real. they are serious and they are many. they will not be met easily or in a short span of time. but know this, america. they will be met. >> zachary, the president said that they will be met. the same challenges and many cases, some improvements we have seen

. the other end of it from a policy standpoint is president obama talking about more money for psychiatric services for specifically young people to try to figure out an early age prone to violent behavior. i guess my two questions about that, i wonder, first of all, is this going to necessitate a change in the law about doctor/patient confidentiality? if a red flag, you know, is raised, are we going to need to change the law so the doctor is able to alert the authorities and act on the information? flip side of that is if that's the case and the doctor's empowered to do that, do you think that might cause young people to clam up and not be as forthcoming as we need them to be? >> great questions, steve. i think the answer to the first thing is, yes. you're seeing a proposal in colorado not getting enough attention on the mental health side and proposed a change in the legal standard where now doctors who previously were supposed to inform the authorities if there was some imminent risk to, you know, of harm to others, now will have a slightly, you know, a less stringent standard of substa

were talking about the anti-obesity bush and michelle obama talked about her daughter's bmi being too high. the problem is, the president at the beginning had a goal of keeping kids out of politics, that's a laudable goal and worthy goal. i think he's right about that. the problem is the president when his back was up against the wall issue after issue used references to his other children and as so many other politicians did, use children period and he did that today. the n.r.a. point is about it's a double standard. the obama daughters get protection, of course they get protection, that's not revealing any substantive information, but why shouldn't other families get the same type of protection for their children, not secret service people, but gun protection or self-defense. i think that's the point they were trying to make. >> any objection for the presidents and republicans and democrats have been used for photo opes and the children, and i've seen the president stand up with soldiers, injured soldiers. >> the children of injured soldiers i know bush has probably done that as wel

: you talked about how obama managed to drive a wedge between red state republicans and blue state republicans. is that what he's trying to do on the debt ceiling debate as well. >> you can the white house adopt a divide and conquer strategy for quite a bit of time. there are 85 house republicans who voted yes on the bill and created the margin it needed to pass. here's the interesting thing of those 85 republicans who voted yes. 70 of them came from blue states. states that voted for barack obama over mitt romney last november. in other words the white house is defending on some of these blue-state republicans. that means if the white house can drive a wedge between the blue state republicans and the red state presence he might be able to get dicey piece of legislation through the house. >> john: it seems to be a strategy. where does the debt ceiling fit into this? it just ensures that we pay the bills that we already spent. why are they talking about the two issues as if they're the same? >> why do they do a lot of things. but the question as that vote approaches in february or m
